The Book Pile

It's really rather neat to be able to request a scholarly book or a hardbound 1972 exhibition catalog through inter-library loan.  To wit, I've just returned research material that I received from William College and the University of Chicago.  Other loans were a bit more local, but still. The library system is pretty cool.

Returning the materials made me realize that I'm done with research for now.  I have recaptured a mountain of time.  So, after handing the materials over to the circulation desk, I marched straight over to the librarian-curated fiction collection.  What a treat!  I now have a stack of books whose titles are completely unfamiliar to me.

I can't wait to get started, though I probably overestimated my ability to get through all these in three weeks.  Yeah, that's probably not going to happen.

If you've read any of these books, you need to let me know.  I could use a bit of direction.  Otherwise, I think I'm going to start with Edible Stories: A Novel in Sixteen Parts by Mark Kurlansky.  As someone motivated by food, this seems to be a good idea.

I don't read a lot of fiction (except trash) but love nonfiction. What were you doing your research about??

I was doing research in support of the Sparkling Amazons exhibition ( www.katonahmuseum.org ) that brings together the work of the 11 women who participated in the 1951 9th St. Show. I've read thousands of pages of history books, art books, art reviews, and magazines. I've also rifled through countless personal papers and archival documents in gallery records and in the Archives of American Art of the Smithsonian Institute. This is all in preparation to support the curator and to be the docent trainer for the museum's docent corp.
