Horton Hears a Who in Carmel

I saw this spent flower in one of the Carmel gardens on vacation. I don't know what it is, but I loved the look; it reminded of the Dr. Seuss book, Horton Hears a Who. Can't you just imagine the whole Who world living on this? This picture actually look better as a black and white photograph. Lately, I've been taking multiple versions of the same picture so that I can compare settings, etc. This one, to my eye, looked best this way. It looked small, for lack of a better word, in color, and that's just not how I felt about it when I saw the flowerhead.

It's a member of the scabiosa family. I believe it is the annual form which is often grown more for the seedheads which you so nicely captured, than the flowers. I can't tell for sure as it doesn't have much for size reference, or the leaves of the plant. Nice job!
